Welcome to the 2013 International Political Sociology Doctoral Workshop

I hope everyone is excited about the upcoming trip to Honolulu. Having now received all of the papers I can say with confidence that we have an excellent workshop ahead of us.

A few reminders as well as vital information for a successful occasion:

1. When you arrive please tell your cab to take you to Lincoln Hall on the University of Hawaii Campus. The address is 821 East-West Road Telephone: 808-944-7816.

2. We will pick you at Lincoln Hall for Dinner at 7 pm.
The first day of the workshop is being held in the rain forest near campus. So we will need to leave Lincoln Hall at 8:30 am. The rest of the events will be on campus within walking distance of your accommodations.

3. If you have not already alerted me to your need for late check-in please do so as I will need to make arrangements. Late check in is anytime after 8 pm.

4. It is warm in Honolulu all year round but particularly in August. I suggest that you dress comfortably. You will find out very quickly that everyone in Hawai’i dresses casually. 

5. Please bring your receipt and boarding pass for your plane ticket with you on the first day so that we can process your reimbursement as quickly as possible.

6. If you have any problems or last minute changes please contact me at anytime.


Format for the event. 

Each doctoral student will present the work of the student they are paired with. Then the student who’s paper has just been presented will give a brief response to the presentation. At the end of the panel each faculty member will discuss the two papers they have been assigned.  

Each panel is scheduled to be 3 hours long. This is so that there is ample time for discussion and Q&A. To guarantee that we have time for audience members and those not presenting to ask questions we will follow this structure with these time allotments:

1st Paper presenter: 15 to 20 minutes
Student respondent: 5 to 7 minutes
2nd Paper presenter: 15 to 20 minutes
Student respondent: 5 to 7 minutes
3rd Paper presenter: 15 to 20 minutes
Student respondent: 5 to 7 minutes
4th Paper presenter: 15 to 20 minutes
Student respondent: 5 to 7 minutes

1st Faculty Respondent: 10 to 15 minutes
2nd Faculty Respondent: 10 to 15 minutes

The remainder of the time will be left for Q & A.

Similar to the event in Rio last year on the last day we ask that each of the faculty members give a 10 to 15 minute reflection on the event and what you see as the future of International Political Sociology as a research agenda.
